Even in Prisons the inmates are still deprived of their “somewhat freedom”. They are in a way forced to not have their own political beliefs. It is not okay that simply because they disagree with the government, that they are put into these prisons. As Will Potter mentioned all of this happens because people do not know what the inmates are put through or why they are incarcerated. But I still feel like even if the people knew what actually happens in these facilities and if they knew the harsh conditions that these inmates are in on a daily basis, nothing would ever change because the people can not say or do anything that will change the way the facilities are ran or change the way that the inmates get treated. Not only are they treated bad but they are deprived of the many things that people take for granted like, hugging their families, having the chance to believe what they want, see the sun rise and set. These inmates will never stop getting dehumanized.
I like how he started by saying that prisoners are like ghosts, because we forget about them. It’s true because I have family in jail and I often forget about them until someone brings them up and then I realize that someone I know is in jail. Watching this I think it’s crazy that the higher up people knew his every speech and move and reminded him when he went to the CMU. It might confirm some conspiracies about how we are truly being watched by those we do not know of. I remember in Ice Cube’s song, ‘Why we Thugs’ he referenced Pelican Bay and I didn’t know it was part of a supermax prison. In the second video one of the inmates who has been there for 17 years questions his sanity because he doesn’t know if he has snapped or not , like other fellow inmates, he was saying that if they let time get to them then time will win.
I believe there is a way to change the way prisons go about how they treat inmates and who they lock up . Kayne west said on social media that he believed that slavery was choice . I believe what he said in an a way true; he just did not say it right . If my ancestors where able to create a SYSTEMATIC movement to over ride plantations and formed a unit that moved and was on the same page then they could have made a dramatic change in our history. I said that because I believe if the same Malcolm X / Dr Martian Luther King type movement was started in the prison and moved to the community it would effect the prison dramatically . There can not be any change if know one goes against the grain
while looking at the videos presented I feel like in the ted talk they told the truth about how prisoners are treated like ghosts. Like stated after the prison doors are closed that doesn’t change the meaning of people they are still humans and should be treated like it. I believe that their is a lot of things we don’t know about prisons and how they treat people. For example the prisoner that was sent to the high protected prison because he was accused for being a Muslim and a terrorist. He never once got a hearing on why he was sent to that CMU prison. The Government has so much power over us that they easily changed the letters of the prisoners. He wrote that he wanted a hearing and wanted to get moved to another prison and believed that he wasn’t supposed to be there. But instead with the government having so much power they put I want to be moved to another prison and easily said no. Looking at the super max prisons they handle everything pretty well and have the people that can control them selves together but have the ones that cant in their own cell. Everyone is treated equally but those who will start fights with other inmates just don’t get the right to be with them.
